A Quality Control (QC) Chemist in the pharmaceutical industry plays a critical role in ensuring that drugs and other pharmaceutical products meet regulatory standards for safety, efficacy, and quality. Here’s an overview of the responsibilities, qualifications, and skills required for this role:

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Testing & Analysis:

    • Conduct chemical, physical, and instrumental analysis of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.
    • Perform tests using techniques like HPLC, GC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, Karl Fischer, Dissolution, and Titration.
  2. Compliance & Documentation:

    • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and regulatory guidelines (FDA, ICH, USP, EP, WHO, etc.).
    • Maintain accurate records of laboratory work, test results, and deviations.
    • Assist in preparation for regulatory audits and writing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
  3. Instrument Calibration & Maintenance:

    • Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of analytical instruments.
    • Troubleshoot and validate methods as per industry standards.
  4. Stability Studies:

    • Conduct stability testing to determine the shelf life and storage conditions of pharmaceutical products.
  5. Raw Material & Packaging Material Testing:

    • Verify the quality of raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and excipients before production.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's/Master’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • 0–5+ years of experience in a QC laboratory (experience requirements vary based on position level).
  • Knowledge of Regulations:
    • Familiarity with GMP, GLP, FDA, ICH, and pharmacopeial guidelines (USP, EP, BP, IP).

Key Skills:

  • Analytical techniques (HPLC, GC, UV-Vis, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of method validation, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
  • Ability to work in team environments and handle regulatory documentation.
